What can I do to smooth the skin under my eyes?

- by Inge van Lotringen

QI’M 61 and my under eye area is simultaneously getting puffier and developing deep lines. Can anything tackle both issues?

APlease seek out an eye specialist when you’re able to, as treatment varies depending on the severity of your symptoms.

severe eye bags require surgery, but this sounds like moderate laxity or puffiness, which can be treated with heat energy to induce collagen production and shrink fatty areas. This should tighten the skin and soften lines.

Oculoplastic surgeon sabrina shah-Desai (perfecteyesltd.

com) loves the Morpheus8, which ‘injects’ radiofrequency energy into the deeper layers of the skin via a handpiece with tiny needles that are heatinsulated. The heat energy reaches under the skin and does not hit the surface, where it could cause burns.

It’s relatively quick and, thanks to numbing cream, also relatively pain-free. There will be some redness, swelling and dry skin for a good week, but after three months your eye area will be visibly rejuvenated.

sabrina (and most other clinicians) treats the full face, as ‘the lower eyelid is really a continuum of the cheek, and collagen loss affects the entire area’.

she advises two to three sessions, spaced four weeks apart, at £600 each, and says results last two to five years. Visit to find providers. inmodemd.co.uk/clinicfinder
