Now try it at home!

-

FIRST, listen to the music and really feel where it takes you. Search on Spotify, Alexa or a similar service for Rodolfo Biagi’s orchestra playing A la gran muneca. Other great tracks from the golden age of tango include Amarroto (Juan D’Arienzo’s orchestra) and Siga el corso (Anibal Troilo). Or look for contemporary tracks such as Oiga tu voz (Romantica Milonguera).

PRACTISE the typical catlike tango walk. Your weight needs to be mainly on the balls of the feet, not the heels. Try it first by yourself, then with your partner. Imagine your chest is stuck to his! As a general rule, the man is the leader and the woman is the follower, which means she is walking backwards.

PRACTISE ‘the embrace’. The woman holds the man’s left hand with her right hand and her left arm wraps around his shoulder, with the hand placed gently on his upper back. His right hand goes on her back, just below the shoulder blades. It must be loose but poised, and just a bit sensual.

HOLD your head high, with your spine straight, your core strong and chest lifted. It’s all about confidence! The chest is very important in tango because this is where the connection is made between the leader and the follower.

TRY the basic step by yourself first. Find one of the many YouTube tutorials available. The rhythm is slow, slow, quick, quick, slow. The leader begins with the left foot, the follower with the right. Don’t rush — wait a few bars to connect to the rhythm and to your partner before starting. For masterclasses, find videos of the world tango dance tournament held every year in Buenos Aires. Or look for the wonderful ‘Carlitos and Noelia’ on YouTube.
