How can the football leagues be decided?
WE HAVE been told the pause on the 2019-20 football season will remain in place until at least April 30 and the cut-off date for the campaign to be completed has been pushed back indefinitely (Mail). I have an idea that may appeal to clubs, fans and players to enable a satisfactory conclusion to this year’s leagues and competitions in view of the fact that the Covid-19 virus is likely to extend into the summer. All outstanding matches should be re-scheduled to the start of the next season, so the 2019/20 league positions will be concluded and the titles won six weeks into the 2020/2021 season. Promotions and relegations would be postponed until the end of the season when there would be play-offs between promotion and relegation teams from both seasons. This retains competition for teams knowing that under normal circumstances they would have been relegated. Alternatively, bottom teams from each season would be relegated automatically and top teams promoted.

WHY not join this year’s fixtures to next year’s, making it the 2019-2021 league programme? Upon recommencement, all teams would have the same position and targets as before, be it titles, promotion or relegation zone. This should give plenty of time to fit in all the fixtures without penalising anyone.

IF the various leagues are declared null and void, the teams leading at present should be awarded splendid trophies with wording such as ‘League X leaders in the 2019-2020 Season’. These would in fact be unique trophies to add to their trophy cabinets.
