‘Simple crofter’ Blackford is rolling in dough

- Andrew Pierce

Sporting his tightfitting waistcoat, the Snp leader in Westminster, ian Blackford, plays up to his Celtic credentials.

But his boast that he is a ‘simple crofter’ with ten acres of land in the Highlands is proving more and more difficult to sustain.

the Mp for ross, Skye and Lochaber was revealed last week to have the second largest haul of parliamentary expenses — at £242,000 — which covers staff, travel and accommodation.

Blackford knows all about large sums of money. in the new Year, the internet provider Commsworld, of which he was non-executive chairman, was taken over. His 4 per cent shareholding netted him an estimated £1.8 million.

He is also chairman of the golden Charter trust which, according to the Mps’ register of interests, pays him £3,247 a month. the trust sells and administers funeral plans. Sadly, undertakers are perhaps one of the few sectors guaranteed to do better business during the pandemic. His daily rate for any additional work pays him a further £1,500.

All in all, with his Mp’s salary of £81,000, he’s doing very nicely thank you for a humble crofter.
