Image of death and disgrace
sir – I saw with horror the photographs published on May 1 in The Daily Mail concerning the execution of Mussolini.
Those responsible for such a foul, wicked deed should be brought to justice, but it seems to me you published the pictures for the sole purpose of advertising your paper.
C., Birmingham. sir – Thank you for publishing the graphic pictures of Mussolini . . . perhaps we shall learn some lessons if these are exhibited in the future.
W.G. norton. sir – On what pretext do you print such hideous photographs of Mussolini? I know I am not alone in deploring unnecessary emphasis on horror, and tacit connivance at blood-lust and revenge. r. Kennedy.
sir – I AM DISGUSTED by your gloating attitude.
E. Pallett, Kent.
WE PrintEd the pictures neither to gloat nor advertise, but for the record; and to bring home awareness of the savagery of the passions unloosed in Europe, in whose future Britain is deeply concerned. sir – The over-enthusiasm of the Daily Mail is a disturbing influence on those of us sitting for Preliminaries of School Certificate. Your headlines made us expect VE Day any minute, and we could do no work with the thought of two days’ holiday ahead. we are now in the middle of examinations with no revision done.
Four Misled Schoolgirls. thE daily Mail expected news of VE day any minute, still does and makes no apology to remiss examinees.
sir – Stick to your principles. no bias. Put black arrows on your war map where French Army is advancing, driving the Boche from France. let the English know France is still in the picture.
E.C. Watson, richmond.
SMall papers mean small maps; small maps, fewer arrows; and fewer arrows make complete coverage of all military progress impossible. it is never our policy to belittle the French contribution — as 48,000 readers of our Continental edition in Paris know well. Vive l’Entente!
