90k benefits cheat rode in speedway bike races
A CHEAT who claimed £90,000 in disability benefits was caught competing in speedway races and leading an exercise class.
Stephen Hodgkinson, 58, had said he needed round-theclock care and a wheelchair.
He initially made a genuine claim for support in 2002 as he had Aids, a court heard.
But his condition improved and he continued to unlawfully claim benefits amounting to £90,000 over 17 years.
A Department for Work and Pensions investigation was launched last year after a tipoff and Hodgkinson was put under surveillance.
He was seen walking around a speedway track and riding in competition for the Birmingham Monarchs club. He also taught a cycling exercise class.
DWP investigators found pictures of him in his bike leathers and helmet posing with trophies on social media.
Hodgkinson, of Smethwick, West Midlands, pleaded guilty to failing to report a change in circumstances and dishonestly obtaining benefits. He was given an 18-month jail sentence at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Monday, suspended for two years, and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.
