GUERRILLA GOLFERS

Green with envy at England, these rebels just couldn’t resist a round...

- By John Paul Breslin

GOLFERS are undoubtedly teed off that their counterparts in England can now play while courses in Scotland remain shut.

However, some of them could not resist a round and hit the fairways yesterday.

A number of golfers were spotted playing on the Xcite nine-hole course in Balbardie Park of Peace in Bathgate, West Lothian.

The course is owned by West Lothian Council and operated by leisure trust West Lothian Leisure (WLL). All of the flags have been removed from the course to discourage anyone from playing and WLL said it has been reminding the public that the course is closed.

A WLL spokesman said: ‘West Lothian Leisure staff are either furloughed or working from home as per the Government guidelines and therefore are unable to monitor the golf courses and grounds we manage.

‘We have been in communication with the local community police, who are making regular checks on the golf course and our outdoor facilities.

‘Our outdoor facilities are positioned with easy access for locals, and the course itself is situated within a public park.

‘We continue to ask the public to follow Scottish Government guidelines and not to use the golf course until further notice.’

Police Scotland said it was unaware of the incident and reiterated government guidance that people should leave home only for food, medicines and exercise.
