Normal People earns an emoji

-

after pulling in 16.2million viewers in its first week on BBC iPlayer, the hit series Normal People has been given a new honour – its own emoji.

Called a ‘hashflag’, twitter has included the emoji – a small icon used to express an idea or emotion – alongside the hashtag of #NormalPeople until 11 august. It shows the programme’s lead characters Connell and Marianne looking at each other beneath a broken heart.

Normal People depicts Connell and Marianne’s complicated on-off relationship as they navigate finishing school, moving to Dublin and entering adulthood.

throughout the 12-part-series Connell, played by Paul Mescal, 24, wears a chain around his neck which, due to its popularity with fans, is also now an emoji.

It’s not the first time twitter emojis have been created for popular tV shows.

Last year Game of thrones emojis were unveiled ahead of the final series.
