I’m not taken in by ‘St Nicola’

-

A regrettAble development over the past year or so has been the lionisation of Nicola Sturgeon by dolts in england. Many do not understand the misery she has wreaked upon Scotland: the divisions, the unhealed wounds, the belligerence, the secrecy with which the SNP operates in Holyrood and beyond.

She is a canny and skilled political operator, no doubt about that. but my heart sinks every time an english commentator or some mad lefty on twitter cries: ‘Why can’t we have someone like Nicola in charge?’ If only you knew the truth.

After the televised leaders’ debate before the 2015 general election, one of the most searched questions on google was whether people in non-Scottish constituencies could vote for the SNP.

What astonishing stupidity: first, for even questioning whether they could do so, which goes against everything the SNP leader stands for. And, second, for the belief that Nicola is some kind of peerless exemplar of all that is noble and good about politics.

‘Sturgeon reads, laughs, connects and does not suffer fools gladly. Maybe it’s time to move to Scotland while the rest of this country gets its house in order,’ wrote one admiring pundit while I guffawed into my tartan hankie. Nicola Sturgeon may read the novels

du jour and have a glancing wit, but that is only part of the story. the truth is that she is obsessed by independence to the detriment of the health and education systems and much else in Scotland.

For how can you successfully run a country when your primary ambition is nationalism? the coronavirus crisis has shown Nicola in her true appalling colours — as someone who is willing to play politics with a pandemic to further her own ambitions. And she seems to have instructed her blowhard SNP lieutenants to do the same.

Undermining boris Johnson, gazumping Dominic raab, making wild accusations — which her own national clinical director said in an interview was ‘rubbish’ — that england was hoarding PPe meant for Scotland: all these she has done to seed Scottish resentment with Westminster in general and boris Johnson in particular.

Surely her focus and energy should be used to tackle the real problems in Scotland — including a woeful lack of testing and a care home crisis that is in danger of spiralling out of control?

but no. Why bother when boris-bashing is so much more satisfying and attractive to those jaundiced members of the Scottish electorate who vote for her?
