How Fry got into a tight spot at Baftas

-

PoLyMATH Stephen Fry bemoans that he is not the right shape or size to look good in designer clothes, even those crafted by his friend, ozwald Boateng.

He recalls: ‘ozwald had the horrific job of dressing me for the first five or six Bafta ceremonies that I hosted at the beginning of this century.

‘I say horrific job because the Boateng style is very much one of elegant lines.

During exactly the time he was making me suits for these occasions, I was putting on the pounds at a rate of what seemed to be a stone a year. In case he ever gets above himself he can be forced to gaze on a picture of me squeezed into one of his suitings.

‘As P. G. Wodehouse put it: “He looked as though he had been poured into his clothes and forgotten to say ‘when’.” ’
