McIlroy keen to put Ryder Cup on hold

- By DEREK LAWRENSON

RORY McILROY thinks the Ryder Cup will be postponed until next year and believes that will be the right decision. The 31-year-old Northern Irishman (pictured) made it clear in past interviews that he didn’t think it should be played without fans at Whistling Straits in September, saying it would damage the event’s integrity. Now the influential world No 1 has gone one step further, telling BBC Northern Ireland: ‘My personal hunch is that I don’t see how it is going to happen, so I do not think it will happen. ‘The majority of players would like to see it pushed back until 2021 so that they can play in front of crowds and have the atmosphere that makes the Ryder Cup so special. ‘The players are the ones who make the Ryder Cup. ‘If they are not on board with it, and don’t want to play, then there is no Ryder Cup. ‘I see it being pushed back until 2021 and, honestly, I think that will be the right call.’ The final decision is due to be made by the PGA of America and the European Tour next month.
