ISLANDS OF THE GODS

Create your own Greek legacy by taking a cruise, writes Peter Davenport

-

MYTHOLOGY is synonymous with ancient Greece, and it’s said that after creating the Earth, God thrust the last remaining rocks into the Aegean Sea to form the Greek islands. There are more than 6,000 of them, with countless picture-perfect spots just waiting to be explored.

With so much choice, it’s fortunate many of the major cruise lines, including MSC, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean, have a wide choice of fabulous itineraries to take you on a journey of discovery around these beautiful islands. On just one trip, you can wake up to a different Greek island almost every day.

From unpacking only once and delicious international cuisine to fantastic daily entertainment, luxurious spas and exceptional service, there’s a lot to love about ocean cruising.

Plus, most Greek island cruises depart from Rome or Venice, so why not spend a day or two exploring these iconic cities, too?

Still deciding on your ports of call? Here are some personal favourites...

RHODES

This island, once home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, has a rich and fascinating history. An absolute must is a visit to the magical village of Lindos, where cobbled walkways, golden beaches and pristine waters are set against the backdrop of the magnificent Lindos Acropolis.

CORFU

Corfu is one of the greenest islands in Greece, with natural beauty, history and architecture sitting side by side in the island’s medieval old town, famous for its narrow streets, quaint shops and tavernas. Fans of James Bond will love wandering among the marbled statues of Greek gods in the lush gardens of the Achilleion Palace at Gastouri, just south of Corfu Town. It was one of the filming locations featured in For Your Eyes Only.

SANTORINI

Originally home to the Minoans before a volcanic eruption in 1600BC, Santorini is built on the now dormant volcano. Take a cable car to the top, stopping for a photo in front of that backdrop: the beautiful blue and white buildings of Oia town looking out across the Aegean. There’s a vibrant art scene in Santorini, too, so be sure to check out the tiny galleries you’ll find around every corner.

Your cruise line will have a full list of excursions and ports of call in the Greek islands, bookable in advance or during your cruise. Alternatively, create your own adventures ashore by booking online.
