Advertising boss killed in freak fall as he climbs embankment

- By Paul Drury

AN advertising executive has died in a ‘freak’ accident after he fell down an embankment onto boulders.

Guy Robertson suffered serious head injuries as a tree branch he was clinging onto broke off as he tried to scale the embankment.

The incident on Sunday sparked a major rescue operation involving 30 members of the emergency services.

Mr Robertson, 59, pictured, had been dropped off by his partner, Angela Wood, for a walk through Glasgow’s Dawsholm Park before he was due to meet his father later in Bearsden, near Glasgow.

But after taking a wrong turning into a dead end, he tried to climb over to the other side using trees and vegetation.

His brother Grant asked a friend to post an explanation on social media yesterday, confirming the incident.

He wrote: ‘Guy’s death was the result of a tragic – indeed freak – accident that as you already know took place around 1.30pm yesterday [Sunday] afternoon in Dawsholm Park.’

The account says that ‘on any other day’ Guy would have emerged unscathed from the fall. However, it appeared he had sustained ‘irrecoverable injuries’ after striking his head on a tree branch or rock.

The statement added: ‘A female GP, jogging on the other side of the river [Kelvin] witnessed the accident and forded the river to attend to Guy who was very seriously injured and already in a state of unconsciousness. Another witness phoned the emergency services. ‘Guy passed away peacefully with family by his side at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.’

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: ‘Two fire appliances and two water rescue units were mobilised to the scene. Crews assisted paramedics.’

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: ‘We attended to assist other emergency services and a 59-year-old man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in a critical condition.’

Mr Robertson was managing director of Glasgow-based GRA Independent Marketing and Advertising.
