JUNE 4, 1962 ACCUSATIOnS of doping, threats by certain countries never to compete again, referees sending an ultimatum, 37 players on the injured list, and four sent off — that’s the scandalous tale this morning after only 12 of 32 World Cup games have been played.

These championships have become football thuggery, played by half-crazed, frightened men driven to extremes by team managers scared of defeat. JUNE 4, 1965 COME On, come get back in! That was the order that went out from Cape Kennedy today to Major Edward White [who became the first American astronaut to walk in space] as he gambolled around 100 miles over the United States.

And in the Gemini 4 spacecraft his partner and pilot, Major James McDivitt, repeatedly urged White: ‘Come in, boy. You’ve still got 3 and a half more days yet.’
