Old Firm are keeping tabs on Toney
PETERBOROUGH director of football Barry Fry claims Celtic and Rangers have placed £15million striker Ivan Toney under scrutiny. Champions Celtic were linked with the 24-year-old in January. And Fry claims agents have also informed him of an interest from Rangers boss Steven Gerrard. Entering the final 12 months of his contract, Toney claimed 26 goals in 39 appearances before the League One season was suspended. Peterborough were in the final play-off position when play stopped but would drop out of the top six if the season was called
on a points-per-game basis. With League One clubs set to vote today on whether to curtail the season, Fry insists the striker will leave this summer for a hefty price tag if they face another season in the English third tier. ‘I’ve had agents on telling me that Rangers and Celtic are very interested,’ he told
Sportsmail. ‘But I haven’t had any calls from either Rangers or Celtic, personally. ‘If they have any sense, they’ll pay us £15million to get him. If they haven’t any sense at all, then I won’t be hearing from them.’ Celtic hope to commit Odsonne Edouard to another season at Parkhead and have opened talks with the Frenchman over an extension.
Rangers’ plans to cash in on Alfredo Morelos have also been damaged by the fragile state of the transfer market. The Ibrox side are in the market for a number of players after raising funds from new and existing investors over the summer, however, and Fry expects plenty of clubs to take a look at former Newcastle United youngster Toney after fielding calls from the Bundesliga, MLS and the English Championship. Fry added: ‘As things stand, we won’t get promoted and won’t even be in the play-offs.
‘That being the case, Ivan Toney is definitely for sale. But only at the right price.’
