KATE FIGHTS BACK THE TEARS

KATE Garraway fought back tears yesterday as she revealed her ‘miracle’ husband has nearly died six times.

Derek Draper, 52, remains in hospital 100 days after he was admitted with acute Covid-19 and placed in an induced coma.

Making an emotional return to Good Morning Britain, Miss Garraway, 53, said she is in a ‘very desperate situation’ as her husband ‘sort of can’t wake up’ despite being brought out of the coma.

He no longer has the virus but it has left him with multiple health problems, including liver and kidney failure. Miss Garraway said their children Darcey, 14, and Billy, ten, have ‘effectively lost their dad’. She added: ‘They haven’t, he’s there, they’re talking to him on FaceTime. He can’t respond, but you know he’s not a presence in the way he should be. There is fantastic hope that he is still alive. The doctors keep saying it is a miracle.’

She said she was told by one doctor that her husband is ‘as sick as anyone I’ve ever seen in 35 years of medicine’.

She continued: ‘Six times they said he wasn’t going to make it. The problem is he is very, very sick. His lungs are starting to get better, his kidneys are doing better, his liver is doing better, but they don’t know how much better he can get.’

She said medical pathways have been changed because of Mr Draper, with doctors now checking things earlier in other patients. ‘I think he would be very pleased about that,’ she said.

Miss Garraway revealed she will be returning to work on Monday to fill in for Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid.

She said: ‘Derek would not just be saying “come back” he would be saying, “why haven’t you done it before?”’
