Elton’s ‘hurt’ ex-wife sues him for £3m

- By Eleanor Sharples TV and Radio Reporter

SIR Elton John’s ex-wife is suing him for £3million amid claims he broke the terms of their divorce by revealing details about her in his memoir and hit movie.

Renate Blauel, 67, was married to the star for four years from 1984.

The German recording engineer – who is notoriously private – is unhappy that details of their marriage were revealed in the biopic Rocketman and autobiography, Me.

The disclosures triggered mental health problems, her claim said.

In court documents filed at the High Court in London by Miss Blauel, she claimed that she and Sir Elton, 73, tried to have children but could not conceive. This allegedly contradicts Sir Elton’s 2019 memoir, in which he said it was only when he married David Furnish in 2005 that he wanted to have children. The couple now have sons Zachary, nine, and Elijah, seven. In the documents, Miss Blauel claims the singer agreed to take out certain passages before the book was published. However, in one segment, Sir Elton talked about breaking Miss Blauel’s heart.

‘I’d broken the heart of someone I loved and who loved me unconditionally, someone I couldn’t fault in any way,’ he wrote. ‘Despite all the pain, there was no acrimony involved at all. For years afterwards, whenever something happened to me, the Press would turn up on her doorstep, looking for her to dish the dirt, and she never, ever has: she told them to leave her alone.’

Sir Elton claims he sent passages which included Ms Blauel to his ex-wife ahead of publication and made ‘amendments’ as per her request. Since Rocketman was released, Ms Blauel has suffered ‘recurring nightmares, agoraphobia, anxiety, depression, and fear, and has had to relive her past constantly,’ her QC Adam Wolanski said.

Sir Elton has denied breaching the terms of the divorce settlement.
