JK Rowling threatened by ‘cancel culture’ mob over social media comments on SNP trans bill

-

HARRY Potter author JK Rowling is one if the latest ‘cancel culture’ victims on social media.

After expressing her concerns about the SNP’s Gender Recognition Act (GRA) - which will allow a person to legally change their gender without a medical diagnosis - Miss Rowling was targeted with vile abuse.

Despite explaining her fears over the impact of the GRA on women’s rights and access to refuge, she was threatened by hundreds of pro-trans activists accusing her of hatred.

Under the new law, lawyer Lois

McLatchie believes that Miss Rowling would have found herself facing criminal charges – despite her attempts to debate and explain her views.

She said: ‘JK Rowling is a great example of the kind of idea that would fall under the category that would be silenced unfairly by this [hate crime] bill.

‘What we are doing we are looking at cancel culture, looking at the way people on Twitter can silence someone and make them fear speaking, and we are giving them the weight of the law behind them, we are allowing the state to police legitimate conversations.’

Cancel culture has become a particular issue in relation to the GRA, transgender rights and other emotive topics, such as abortion.

Earlier this month, an imprint of JK Rowling’s hands were daubed with blood-like bright red paint after she was accused of being transphobic.

Pictures showed the golden handprints in Edinburgh after they were vandalised – with the transgender pride flag planted next to them.
