Be king of the castle

Victorian villa by ancient fortress is a fine family home,

- writes Paul Drury

It may offer views of one of Scotland’s most important ancient castles, but this splendid family home is bang up to date. the C-listed sandstone property teams contemporary style with the stunning period features characteristic of a Victorian property.

From the front of this semi-detached house, the perspective is a historical one, taking in the towers and ramparts of the 15th century Stirling Castle.

However, inside the owners of this property have moved with the times, creating the kind of modern living accommodation that many families would covet.

there is also a self-contained flat in the basement, which might suit an elderly relative or be rented out to a student at Stirling University.

A glazed sitting and dining area has been built to the rear of the property and in the garden there is a separate cedarwood office, which allows you to work from home in peace.

Stephen Simpson, of selling agent Aberdein Considine, said: ‘It would be hard to find a better location in the whole of Stirling.

‘the King’s Park address is one of the most coveted in the town. You have lovely views to parkland and the towers of Stirling Castle beyond. the owners are also to be congratulated for keeping the house up to date. there has been a lot of interest.’

the interior has been given a minimalist sweep, with most of the walls decorated in white or light grey shades.

the reception hall offers a taste of what is to come, as the front door – with its beautiful etched glass window – opens onto Amtico flooring. the beautifully restored cupola at the top of the house, adorned with ornate and elaborate cornicing on four sides, floods the hall with natural light.

the muted colour scheme works to best effect in the dining room, where the eyes are instantly drawn to the gorgeous castle views.

treats are to be found throughout this four-bedroom property.

the formal lounge has lovely cornicing, a feature fireplace and a big bay window that looks out to the verdant Victoria Square. the bespoke, hand-painted kitchen has Iroko worktops, Amtico flooring and a Rangemaster Elise range cooker.

Upstairs, bedroom number three has an outside balcony. the owners say that the en suite off bedroom two ‘requires upgrading’ but urgent jobs needing attention in this house are difficult to spot. the main family bathroom was refitted late last year.

the basement flat, which continues the minimalist theme, was completely refurbished two years ago, and has a lounge, kitchen, bedroom and shower room.

the garden office was created at the same time, offering an external sanctuary.

With all that on offer, it is perhaps no surprise that a closing date for offers has been set for next Wednesday.
