How Emmys have split up the Normal People lovers
TOGETHER they captured our hearts in a tale of first love. But the Normal People stars have been cruelly split by the prestigious Emmy Awards.
While Paul Mescal was nominated yesterday for his role in the hit BBC drama, his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones was snubbed in the US TV awards.
The London-born actress played Marianne Sheridan alongside Mescal as her onoff love interest Connell Waldron, a role which has earned him a nomination for lead actor in a limited series or movie.
Mescal, 24, is among a handful of British and Irish stars recognised for the annual awards ceremony. Also nominated is Olivia Colman who will be hoping to reign over Jodie Comer when the pair go head-to-head for lead actress in a drama series.
The Crown star has been nominated for her role as the Queen in the third series of the Netflix drama. Miss Colman and Miss Comer, who plays brutal assassin Villanelle in BBC drama Killing Eve, will face competition from, among others, Jennifer Aniston for The Morning Show, and Miss Comer’s co-star Sandra Oh.
Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Princess Margaret in The Crown, is up for supporting actress, along with Thandie Newton in Westworld.
The Crown also has two directing nods and a writing nomination for creator Peter Morgan. Normal
People has also received a nomination in each category.
Dundee-born star Brian Cox is nominated for lead actor in a drama series for his role as media tycoon Logan Roy in Sky Atlantic hit Succession; Jeremy Irons is up for lead actor in a limited series or movie for HBO’s Watchmen.
Irish actress Fiona Shaw is nominated for Killing Eve, while Matthew
Macfadyen earned a supporting actor nod for Succession, alongside his co-stars Nicholas Braun and Kieran Culkin.
The dystopian comic book series Watchmen leads this year’s nominations, with 26, followed by Amazon’s The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, with 20. The ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will take place, virtually, on September 20.
