Football star in holiday brawl jets back to UK

- By Arthur Martin

enGLAnD star Harry Maguire returned home yesterday with question marks surrounding his footballing future following his drunken holiday brawl in Mykonos.

The £190,000-a-week defender flew back to Britain after spending two nights in a cell and appearing in court charged with assaulting a police officer on the Greek party island.

His captaincy of Manchester United and place in the england squad will face scrutiny while legal action hangs over his head.

Maguire, 27, reportedly enjoyed a five-hour drinking session, racking up a bar bill rumoured to be around £63,000 on vintage champagne, cocktails, steaks and lobster.

The tab included an £18,000 bottle of Dom Perignon Brut 2002, a £17,000 bottle of Armand de Brignac Champagne and £750 on several bottles of Jack Daniel’s.

He is understood to have been with Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley, Love Island star Chris Hughes and snooker player Judd Trump, as well as members of his family.

Local media reports claimed that the footballer started fighting to defend his younger sister, Daisy, after she was stabbed in the arm with a pointed object.

‘Harry went spare after seeing the blood on his sister and then it all kicked off big style,’ a source said. ‘Harry reacted just like anyone would if they saw a member of their family being attacked.’

Maguire was arrested after police became involved along with two other Britons, aged 28 and 29. All three could face jail. Although the footballer denies the charges, his conduct could put his Manchester United captaincy in jeopardy.

He will also find out if it threatens his place in the england team, with manager Gareth Southgate set to announce his squad tomorrow for two games next month. Maguire – who is holidaying with girlfriend Fern Hawkins – appeared at a two-hour court hearing behind closed doors on the nearby island of Syros on Saturday. The public prosecutor’s office said he faced ‘misdemeanour’ charges of assault and aggravated assault.

A further count of attempting to bribe an officer, which carries a threeyear maximum sentence, is understood to have been dropped.

The 6ft 4in defender was allowed to return to the UK and he decided to cut short his holiday.

A further court hearing today will go ahead with just his lawyers.

The court may decide to adjourn for a later trial or bring the proceedings to a close.
