Should couples be able to hug their grandchildren?

-

I AGREE that married grandparents should not be treated differently from single grandparents when it comes to seeing their grandchildren (Letters). Spare a thought for those of us in Leicester who can’t have our grandchildren in our gardens even when socially distanced. The Government has decided it is fine for us to go to pubs and restaurants mixing with people we don’t know. They are not wearing masks because they are eating and drinking — but we can’t invite our families to wear masks and join us in our gardens. Why is it more

dangerous for us to sit outdoors, two metres apart wearing masks, with people we know have been careful throughout lockdown, than to be indoors with bare-faced strangers?

WHAT is the difference between a Scottish Covid bug, a Welsh Covid bug and an English Covid bug? It appears that the English bug can make a distinction between a single grandparent and married grandparents hugging their young grandchildren. The unfairness of this is causing enormous heartache to families. Who knows the effect on the mental health of

young children who had been used to spending time with grandparents?

I AM surprised so many people are scared to break the advice for married couples not to see their grandchildren. This is impossible to police. I witnessed a wonderfully happy event in my local pub. A little girl rushed in and cried out ‘Grandad!’ She leaped on to the lap of a man near me and cuddled him. She then did the same to her grandma. It appears they hadn’t seen each other for months. The joy on their faces made my day.
