A month on, doomed loco lifted clear

- By Alan Shields

A DERAILED locomotive was finally removed from a fatal crash site yesterday after a 600-ton crane was brought in to start lifting the wreckage.

The giant crawler crane removed the 70-ton engine from the site of last month’s fatal rail crash at Carmont, near Stonehaven, Kincardineshire.

In a swift operation, the locomotive was lifted onto a purpose-built road where it will be covered and subjected to further forensic investigation.

The remoteness of the site has caused problems since the day of the tragedy on August 12. The recovery process has involved constructing a half-mile road and temporary bridges over the surrounding farmland to bring the specialist lifting equipment to the site.

Once the carriages have been removed, engineers will be able to assess the extent of repairs required to the tracks and a bridge damaged in the derailment.

No timescale has been given on how long the repairs will take, although Network Rail estimated it would be several weeks.
