Don’t barrack the men-only Garrick

-

BUSINESSWOMAN emily Bendell wants to join the Garrick Club, which only has male members (Mail). She thinks the club is outdated for having such a rule — so why on earth does she want to join it? — and is seeking an injunction against this discriminatory policy. What does she think about the Women’s Institute, which only allows female members? emily is just another member of the woke cancel culture. I don’t want to join the Garrick Club or the Women’s Institute, but I do believe they have a right to exist and have their own rules. Why is it OK to have women-only clubs, but not ones for men, especially those who have been ‘cancelled’ and placed in the category of pale, male and stale?

ERIC CRAGGS, shildon, Co. Durham.

HAVEN’T these clever ladies who are desperate to join the men ever thought they could create their only club? I would much prefer more pleasant surroundings than the ancient, carpeted, dark wood rooms of gentlemen’s clubs.

DOREEN BATES, Hilton, Cambs.

As a male impersonator, Bishop Fogey, I had no trouble getting into the Garrick Club. I would love to say I was in character when I went in, but no! They let me visit to view their wonderful archive of theatre records.

I am in favour of boys having their clubs. How about women starting their own club in honour of Lilian Baylis, the theatrical producer who managed the Old vic and Sadler’s Wells and ran the forerunners of the english National Opera, the english National Theatre and the Royal Ballet.

ROSE m. MOLONEY, Findhorn, moray.

I IMAGINE the Garrick Club was founded for men to escape the likes of emily Bendell, who seems to think women have the right to muscle in on every aspect of male lives. She could always open a club for women if she wished, but I won’t be joining. Long may men have the right to their own spaces.

JENNIFER BALL, london W6.

IF WOMEN want female-only safe spaces, why should they complain if men want male-only clubs? I for one am content to let men talk about football, cricket and any other mundane subject they find interesting in their own company.

Jill MCGARRY, nantwich, Cheshire.

WHY would a woman want to join a men-only club? It can only be to court controversy and attract publicity.

RONALD HOPES, Oakdale, gwent.

DOES emily Bendell’s lingerie company make underpants for men?

BARRY LAZENBURY, yate, glos.
