Conway sure Hendry can find scoring touch

- By BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

WINGER Craig Conway has backed his misfiring St Johnstone team-mate Callum Hendry to end his goal drought soon. The Perth attacker has yet to find the net in seven matches this season and, on Saturday, he missed one particularly good chance to break his duck with a miscued header from a Danny McNamara cross. But Conway has backed the 23-year-old, who hit the net nine times last term, to get back on the goal trail once his first of the new campaign arrives. ‘I have seen it a million times when strikers go through a barren spell,’ said the 35-year-old. ‘He just has to keep working hard and hope one goes in off his backside. ‘The main thing is to keep doing the right things. His link-up play has always been good and I’m sure the goal will come. ‘He’s working hard and looking good in training.’ Conway believes the whole team must take responsibility for a run of one goal scored in four matches after their 1-0 loss at Fir Park. ‘We’re creating chances but we’re not taking them and that’s something we need to work on,’ he added. ‘The game plan was to not give anything away cheaply but we did that after just four minutes. ‘We started slowly and never really got going until the second half. ‘We never worked the Motherwell keeper enough. We made it easy for him. But when Motherwell scored, I don’t think our keeper had another save to make after that. ‘They just sat in and defended well and we didn’t take our chances. ‘They were happy to give us possession but we didn’t do much with it. We probably got what we deserved.’
