Adam’s delight as he finally joins Dundee

- By JOHN GREECHAN and NEIL ROBERTSON

DUNDEE finally got their man last night — after a trio of sponsors bankrolled the signing of former Scotland star Charlie Adam. Lengthy negotiations between the parties were concluded yesterday, with the boyhood Dark Blues fan, who won 26 caps for his country, signing on the dotted line. The former Liverpool midfielder, who has turned out for Dundee in testimonials for Julian Speroni and Dave Mackay, has been in talks with the Dens Park outfit for the past three weeks. In an official statement last night, the club made it clear that the costs of the Adam deal were ‘outwith’ their current financial plan. And they thanked current backers for making it possible to acquire the 34-year-old free agent, saying: ‘We were open to the fact that this meant we would have to get creative to make this deal happen. ‘We would like to thank three current club sponsors, without whom it would not have been possible.’

Adam admitted he was delighted to join a club that means so much to him but stressed he has not come to Dens simply to wind down his career. Indeed, the former Rangers and Scotland star has set his sights on winning the Championship title and insists it was the vision of manager James McPake that sold him on committing to the club. He said: ‘It has taken longer than I expected but I am delighted to be here. This is my club, one that I have grown up supporting. I used to stand on the terraces so it will be nice to play for a club I love. ‘Hopefully we can be successful. This is a big club and obviously we are in the Championship. It has been a tough couple of years but it is about having that belief and ability. ‘The manager is young and upcoming. He is hungry. He sold it to me by picking up the phone. ‘I am not coming here to finish my career — I am coming to win.’
