Waiter admits killing teen, 16, in drug-drive horror smash
Kanad Basi, who was almost twice the drink-drive limit and had taken cocaine and ecstasy, lost control and hit a tree.
His front seat passenger, 16-year-old Jack
Frame, suffered catastrophic head injuries and died at the scene.
The High Court in Glasgow heard that Basi, from the Pollokshields area of the city, initially tried to cover his tracks but yesterday admitted killing the teenager. In a statement, the victim’s family said: ‘Losing Jack was the worst pain our family has endured.’
Basi, 22, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Jack by driving dangerously in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, on February 10 last year. Rear passengers Aiden O’Donnell, 18 at the time, and Eleanor Plenderleith, then 19, both suffered horrific injuries in the crash.
Prosecutor Jane Farquharson told the court Basi drove to a party in Lesmahagow in his BMW 1 series around 1am. Some at the party asked to go for a drive and three of them drove off with him at 2am.
Miss Farquharson told the court he lost control on a bend and the car left the road before hitting a tree. Basi, the only one in the car wearing a seatbelt, suffered a broken wrist.
He climbed into the rear of the car and pushed Miss Plenderleith into the front, but when he called 999 he said he had been driving.
However, when later asked by police if he was the driver he replied: ‘I can’t remember now, but give me half an hour or so and I might remember.’
A breath test showed Basi had an alcohol count of 37. The legal limit is 22. A blood sample showed the presence of cocaine and ecstasy.
Judge Lord Mulholland remanded Basi in custody and deferred sentence. He told the court: ‘This is an utter tragedy for the family of the deceased. If ever there was a case that showed the folly of the combination of drugs, alcohol and speed, it is this case.’ A WAITER has admitted killing a schoolboy in a high-speed crash while high on drugs and alcohol.
