Grimshaw: Gallagher will recover from Euro agony

- BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

LIAM GRIMSHAW has backed Motherwell captain Declan Gallagher to bounce back from his Europa League night of misery.

Gallagher picked up two bookings in 90 seconds in the second half of the 3-0 defeat to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel on Thursday.

His second yellow card was for wrestling Miguel Vitor to the ground in the penalty box for the crucial spot-kick, which was converted by Josue to give the hosts a commanding 2-0 lead.

While trailing 1-0 to Vitor’s first-half header, Motherwell were still very much in the game until Gallagher’s aberration.

But Hapoel took full advantage of their superior numbers and ran out convincing winners, with Elton Acolatse rounding off the scoring at 3-0 as the Israeli side secured their passage to the play-off round.

Now Gallagher’s fellow defender Grimshaw has backed the Scotland international to follow the example of Motherwell centre-half Bevis Mugabi and respond with a strong display against Rangers at Fir Park tomorrow.

‘Declan can definitely bounce back,’ said Grimshaw. ‘We all makes mistakes.

‘Look at Bevis the previous week. He got sent off against Coleraine in the Europa League qualifier and then came back to play a great game against Aberdeen and scored against them when we won 3-0.

‘Everyone has a bad game at some point. But it’s not the end of the world. You just keep your head down and work hard.

‘It will be another big test against Rangers but they are the sort of games we love playing.’
