Laurence Fox: I’ve raised £5m to launch a new political party
LAURENCE Fox is launching a political party dedicated to the ‘reclamation of our values’.
The outspoken actor said donors had already handed over £5million to help set up the Reclaim party.
Fox, pictured, aims to field dozens of candidates at the next general election in a movement that will fight the ‘culture wars’. The former star of ITV detective series Lewis said on Twitter that politicians had ‘lost touch’ with the people and ‘public institutions now work to an agenda beyond their main purpose’.
He added: ‘Our modern United Kingdom was borne out of the respectful inclusion of so many individual voices.
‘It is steeped in the innate values of families and communities, diverse in the truest sense but united in the want and need to call this island home. The people of the United Kingdom are tired of being told that we represent the very thing we have, in history, stood against. We can reclaim a respectful nation where all are included and none are ashamed to have somewhere to call home.’ Fox, 42, said he had support from ‘those wishing to add their voice to this reclamation of our values’. A Westminster source likened the party to ‘a version of the UK Independence Party for the culture wars’, according to The Sunday Telegraph. ‘This is exactly what the Tory party should be frightened about,’ the source added. Figures close to Reclaim said it wasn’t aligned to the Right or Left. Fox triggered a debate in January when he appeared on BBC Question Time and dismissed claims the media’s treatment of the Duchess of Sussex was racist as ‘boring’.
