CELTIC SEEKING A SPUR
Lennon eyes loan swoop for frozen out Sessegnon
CELTIC are hot on the trail of Ryan Sessegnon with the Parkhead club prepared to do battle with some English Premier League heavyweights in order to land the Tottenham midfielder on loan.
Frustrated with a lack of game time under Jose Mourinho, the 20-year-old will be farmed out by his parent club in the coming days after being left out of last night’s Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea.
Leeds, Brighton and Southampton have registered an interest together with continental powerhouses, including Ajax and Hertha Berlin.
However, Celtic still believe they can persuade Sessegnon to move to Scotland before Monday’s transfer deadline as they finalise the squad they hope can land ten in a row.
A regular with the England Under-21 squad, Sessegnon has
made just 12 senior appearances for Spurs since signing from Fulham for £25million in 2019. Capable of operating on the left of any system, he would represent a significant coup for Celtic if Neil Lennon is able to push a deal through amid stiff competition. With Boli Bolingoli now on loan at Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir after his Covid shame and Mikey Johnston still out injured, Greg Taylor and
Mohamed Elyounoussi are the only natural left-sided options in Lennon’s squad. Celtic retain an interest in Alfie Doughty although so far Charlton have been reluctant to entertain any bids. It’s likely Celtic will return to the table with a fresh offer if they are unable to strike a deal for Sessegnon. Casper Hojer, the Aarhus defender, is another possible target before Monday’s deadline. Celtic fly out to Bosnia ahead of their Europa League play-off with FK Sarajevo tomorrow.
