LAMPARD HITS BACK IN MOURINHO ROW

- By ADRIAN KAJUMBA

FRANK LAMPARD has dismissed Jose Mourinho’s claims that the Tottenham boss was offering his Chelsea counterpart advice during their touchline spat. But he promised there will be no repeat fallout with Roy Hodgson due to his respect for the Crystal Palace manager. Lampard locked horns with his former mentor at Stamford Bridge during their Carabao Cup tie on Tuesday which Mourinho’s Spurs eventually won on penalties. Chelsea were 1-0 up when the war of words broke out and the Portuguese insisted he was reminding Lampard that managers need to be vocal on the sidelines when their teams are losing as well as leading. Mourinho referenced Lampard’s demeanour when the latter’s side were 3-0 down at West Brom last weekend to underline his point. He said: ‘I felt sorry for him because he was really sad and quiet in his chair.’ Ahead of Palace’s visit to Stamford Bridge, Lampard insisted his clash with Mourinho was not an attempt to lay down a marker as a young manager. ‘I don’t think any remarks made on the touchline during the game can be called advice,’ said

Lampard. ‘They can probably be wrapped up as advice after a game when you manage to get back in the game and win on penalties, so I don’t think that is the case. I would always be happy to not just take advice from fellow managers, but everything around me. ‘I think that’s what moulds you as a manager so I don’t think the Jose incident was ever advice.’ On facing Hodgson, under whose England reign he won 16 caps, Lampard said: ‘I don’t want to pre-empt it but there’ll be no touchline spats with me and Roy tomorrow because I’ve got too much respect for him and I think he’s just brilliant as a man.’
