Portrait of a widower 10 years on as Dewani hits the gym
DRESSED for the gym before his daily workout, life seems to have settled into a comfortable routine for Shrien Dewani.
It was exactly ten years ago yesterday that his new bride Anni was murdered on their South African honeymoon, a killing the wealthy businessman was accused of orchestrating.
Anni, 28, was shot dead when the couple’s taxi was hijacked in Cape Town in 2010. Dewani was extradited to South Africa to face trial six years ago and, on his first day in court, accepted he was bisexual – an admission which l ed to revelations about a secret life with male prostitutes.
The case against him was later thrown out by a judge, however, and he returned to Britain where he is said to be enjoying a life of leisure. He was photographed last week in affluent Maida Vale, northwest London, just before lockdown on his daily trip to the gym.
A source said Dewani, 40, whose family had made their fortune through a string of West Country care homes, had bought a number of properties in the area. ‘I believe he is making a lot of money through these homes, and seems to lead a life of leisure,’ they said.
Anni’s killers claimed Dewani had paid them £1,200 to murder his wife. Dewani has always denied this, claiming it was good fortune he was able to escape the robbery and the killers only implicated him in a bid to save their own skins.
Anni’s family maintain Dewani has failed to answer many questions about her last hours and accused him of deceiving her about his sexuality when they wed.
