ALAN BLEASDALE’S one-off drama was first shown in 1980, and led to the sequel series Boys From The Black Stuff (which is on BritBox). Bernard Hill and Gary Bleasdale (cousin of Alan) star in this searing time capsule about a Merseyside tarmac gang in recession-hit Britain.

THE Trainspott­ing author (pictured with novelist Nadifa Mohamed) is fascinated by what causes offence, and the way that social media has allowed people to become offended by things before they even understand them.
