CYBER-HACKING IN SPORT...
■ IN October this year, the UK Government announced that Russian military intelligence had carried out cyber-attacks on organisations and officials linked to the Tokyo Olympics.
■ THE Football Leaks website revealed classified financial transactions in European football in 2016 and 2018 after carrying out sophisticated cyberattacks. They leaked internal documents which allegedly proved Manchester City had broken financial fair play rules, which initially saw City banned from the Champions League.
■ IN August 2016, Russian hackers ‘Fancy Bears’ attacked the World AntiDoping Agency. The group leaked the drug-testing files of several athletes. The same group then hacked the IAAF’s servers in early 2017.
■ A MAN was arrested in February after hacking into the emails of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola (right).
■ THE FA of Ireland were hit by a cyberattack in June 2019 when attackers accessed their email system.
■ IN March 2018, Italian club Lazio lost £1.75m to an email scam, transferring money to fraudsters after being hacked.
■ IN October 2017, Scottish Premiership club Hamilton lost around £800,000 after falling victim to a vishing attack on the club’s bank accounts.
■ AN EFL side nearly postponed a fixture last season after hackers used ransomware to attack security systems and block the turnstiles.
