Warriors give Cardiff the blues as Jones comes off bench to clinch vital win

- By ROB ROBERTSON

HUW JONES’ release from Scotland’s Nations Cup squad paid major dividends for Glasgow last night as he came off the bench to secure only their second win of the season. Jones capped an impressive Warriors performance by intercepting a pass to score the vital try ten minutes from time. Danny Wilson’s side dominated play and should have won by more against a Cardiff side who were always second best.

Although Jones grabbed the glory, namesake winger Lee Jones was man of the match in his first game for 22 months after returning from injury. Wilson, whose team had won just once in their previous six, said: ‘In these key moments, you need game breakers like Huw and his try took the pressure of us at such an important time. ‘I felt we were dominant. To get our first win on the road this season is fantastic.’ The Welsh side took a first-minute lead through a Jarrod Evans penalty. Glasgow’s Peter Horne missed his own kick on the ten-minute mark but made up for it three minutes later with a successful second attempt.

Most of the attacking moves were being put together by the visitors but they failed to take advantage of their possession. Cardiff thought they had taken the lead against the run of play when winger Owen Lane touched down in the corner. Referee Frank Murphy called in TMO Rhys Thomas to look at a replay of the build-up, however, which showed Gwilym Bradley had knocked on. Four minutes before the break, Glasgow

went ahead through a second penalty from Horne. Then, a minute after the break, winger Ratu Tagive was stopped from scoring in the corner by Aled Summerhill’s well-timed tackle. Glasgow were made to pay in the next play when Cardiff won a turnover and kicked ahead. Lane won the sprint to recycle the ball to his back division. Full-back Matthew Morgan ran a good line, as did Summerhill, who played in captain Kristian

Dacey to score. Evans put over the extras. Cardiff’s Bradley got a yellow card for a deliberate knock on when Glasgow were on the attack and Horne put over the penalty awarded against him. His replacement, Brandon Thomson, then put over a penalty to put Warriors ahead. Both sides knew the next try would be vital and it came for Glasgow when Jones scored. Thomson put over the extras.
