Is it the right decision to move city into Tier 3?

-

LONDON Mayor Sadiq Khan is mortified that the capital’s pubs and restaurants have been shut down under Tier 3 restrictions. I didn’t hear him voicing sympathy for the North when we were locked down. Londoners have only themselves to blame as they acted as if they were untouchable. Now they’re living in the real world.

BARRY DAVIES, Chorley, lancs.

NOT applying Tier 3 to the capital with its rising infection rates would have been unfair on Manchester.

AlAN lEEDHAM, Manchester.

WHERE were the newspaper columns when Leeds was plunged into Tier 3? Families living 20 miles away from areas with high infection rates have been subject to the same restrictions. Now precious London has been put in Tier 3, everyone is up in arms.

GARY SPENCE, leeds.

THE commercial ramifications for hospitality businesses in the capital after being put into Tier 3 will be horrendous, but no more so than in my area. We are in Tier 3 despite low infection rates because we have been included as part of Coventry and Solihull. We were told county boundaries had to be used for the sake of simplicity, but this didn’t apply to Slough, which was put in Tier 3 despite the rest of Berkshire being in Tier 2. It is disgusting that complex issues involving people’s lives and the survival of businesses are sacrificed to political and administrative expediency. G. GRISTWOOD, Wellesbourne, Warks.

WHY close businesses that made the most effort to comply with the rules? In Tier 3 London, the streets are still crowded with shoppers yet restaurants and theatres, which made huge efforts to keep their patrons safe, are shut. Could we think the unthinkable? Shut shops, disperse crowds, maybe even cordon off streets and allow only limited numbers. Then announce: ‘You can only come to Central London if you are going to a restaurant or theatre.’ This would support the very people who have done the most to comply with the rules. Hospitality venues and theatres do not spread the virus. Crowded shopping areas do. ERIC JONES, Evesham, Worcs.
