WHAT TO WEAR THIS WEEKEND
FESTIVE PARTY DRESS
TIME TO DRESS UP
After spending too much time lolling in leisure wear, I’m determined to go full-on fabulous for Christmas.
even if you’re not actually going anywhere, dressing up will give you the psychological cue you need to create a sense of occasion for the kitchen dancefloor.
this prom-style from LK Bennett would normally be my outfit of choice for cocktails at London’s Claridge’s with friends. It has a slightly regal air about it. the nipped in full skirt gives a graceful nod to the fifties, and the shiny jacquard fabric has a lustre that’s more subtle than sequins — perfect for stay-at-home celebrations.
CHIC NOT CREASED
A slightly stiff fabric works best on this feminine style, so the skirt hangs in a sophisticated A-line. It won’t crease either, so you’ll still look chic and put together after a day of festivities.
OLD-SCHOOL GLAMOUR
Helena Bonham Carter is a fan of full- skirted, corseted dresses by Vivienne Westwood, which she uses to create drama and glamour both on and off the screen.
for the same look on the high street, try Coast’s pink maxi version ( below) with a tulle petticoat for extra volume. not just for petites, Chi Chi London’s dress (also below) is made for sizes 18-26.
A STYLE TO FLATTER ALL
not only does the accentuated waist flatter all shapes, the length makes ankles appear slimmer, too. Plus the higher and square necklines are particularly f l attering f or larger busts, as they allow for a supportive bra to remain unseen. you can always add a necklace for extra Christmas sparkle.
