Kate’s grumble is Christmas crackers
DESPITE the fact she is co-presenting five festive specials of BBC1’s Animal Park, Kate Humble has admitted she ‘absolutely loathes’ Christmas (Mail). I agree with her that it can be about buying stuff that no one needs and eating and drinking to excess. But this year more than ever has reminded us of the true meaning of Christmas. We are all desperate to spend quality time with our loved ones, particularly those we have not been able to see for months because of Covid restrictions. There is pressure on the Prime Minister from medical experts to withdraw the five-day relaxation of the regulations because of the growing number of infections. If this happens, what will be the point of a pile of presents or a turkey dinner with all the trimmings if you can’t hold the hands of those you love?

I CONGRATULATE Kate Humble for her honesty. Christmas is a terrible waste of food and money. Cards, which are expensive to buy and post, are thrown away after a few days on display while many unwanted gifts are dumped. I know several people who every year go into debt to buy presents. If it were up to me, I wouldn’t even put up a Christmas tree and flashing lights. But even though my wife agrees with me about the commercialisation of Christmas, she still likes to see all that tinsel.

REMEMBERING the real meaning of Christmas may help Kate Humble to look at it in a totally different light. Jesus, the Light of the World, came into our broken and sad world to take the punishment that our sins deserve so our relationship with God can be restored. Nothing can be more wonderful and amazing than that. PAULINE HUCKRIDGE, Worcester.
KATE HUMBLE is anti-Christmas? I’m glad there are at least two of us!
