Liverpool go top with late show by Firmino

- By DOMINIC KING

ROBERTO FIRMINO scored a brilliant late header to see champions Liverpool replace Tottenham at the top of the Premier League table last night. Just when it looked like Jose Mourinho had frustrated Jurgen Klopp with a trademark, backs-to-thewall away display, Brazilian Firmino rose to head home Scotland captain Andy Robertson’s cross. ‘An

unbelievable header,’ enthused Alan Shearer on Amazon Prime. Mo Salah put Liverpool ahead after 26 minutes but that was cancelled out by Son Heung-min seven minutes later. Mourinho’s frustration boiled over at the finish when he exchanged words with Klopp. I told him the best team lost and he disagreed,’ he said. ‘We were so close to winning — not so close of a draw — so close of winning, but we missed the chances, we had the chances, had the game under control, a draw would be a bad result. ‘So you can imagine how we feel with a defeat. ‘It was a very good performance, of course some mistakes, some things to improve, a very unfair result. ‘My team told me I am right when I say from the beginning of the season we go to every match to win. ‘We played against the champions in their stadium and we had the best chances to win. ‘The team was brilliant. Today Liverpool didn’t look a team that is champion, European champion, world champion — that difference was not on the pitch. ‘We are together for not a long time. Of course the result is the most important thing.’ Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson added: ‘It was a good game, very tactical, probably what you expect in terms of us dominating with the ball, creating chances and getting done on the counter. ‘Overall, the performance was outstanding.’
