- By Alan Shields

PoLICE have launched a search for a mother and her three young children after they went missing in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

Iona Whyte, 38, and her children Errol, four, and one-year- olds James and Mary, were l ast seen at home i n Montrose, Angus.

They are believed to have left the house between 2am and 3am on Thursday.

Concern was mounting yesterday as they remained unaccounted for.

Police have issued an urgent appeal to the public in their efforts to track the family down.

Residents in the street, just a few hundred yards from the Montrose harbour basin, went about their business yesterday, walking dogs and letting children play with their new Christmas toys outside. A window at the family home could be seen boarded up but it is not known if this was a recent development.

As police waited for a tip- off there was a huge outpouring of alarm for Mrs Whyte and her children’s wellbeing. But no obvious police searches could be seen in the immediate vicinity of the house.

on social media, Ann DuTracy said: ‘Whatever the reason for them leaving I hope they are all safe.’

Sammy F Middleton said: ‘Hope the woman and her three kids are found safe and well, so freezing out there tonight too.’ Tricia Bremner added: ‘Please get in touch with someone to let us know you’re safe with your beautiful wee children for whatever reason you have gone – we care. It’s too cold to be out there with your children.’

Mrs Whyte is described as slim, 5ft 7in, with shoulder-length brown hair. It is not known what clothing any of the family were wearing.

Inspector David Gibson of Police Scotland said: ‘We are becoming increasingly concerned for Iona and her children’s welfare and are keen to trace them as soon as possible.

‘If you have any information about their whereabouts, please contact police as soon as possible.

‘If Iona is reading this media appeal she is requested to make contact with her family or police and let them know they are safe and well.’

The appeal sparked further social media comments, with Glasgow resident Rosie Mcharg posting on Facebook: ‘I hope they find her and kids safe and well...if you do see this doll, call home please and let them know you are safe at least. I know things are tough but you can ask for help.’
