FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED FROM THE SPFL THIS WEEKEND

- CALUM McCLURKIN

NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK FOR LENNON

ACCUSED of chopping and changing personnel too often, Neil Lennon picked the same Celtic XI that defeated Hamilton in midweek but they fell apart in a 2-1 home loss to St Mirren on Saturday. The under-fire Parkhead boss has tried everything to arrest his team’s alarming slide but nothing seems to be working. Celtic have won just one of their six matches in 2021.

DONS SHOULD SAVOUR DEFENSIVE DELIGHT

GOALS may well be in short supply of late for Aberdeen but the Dons can be pleased with their recent defensive efforts. Joe Lewis made two terrific saves in the 0-0 draw away to in-form Livingston. Saturday’s stalemate ensured a third successive clean sheet for Aberdeen. A much-welcome statistic hot on the heels of a 4-1 horror defeat to Ross County.

CADDEN FINDS HIS STRIDE WITH HIBS

IT WAS always going to take a bit of time for Chris Cadden to settle in at Hibernian after spending last year in the MLS with Columbus Crew. Cadden (pictured) made his fourth appearance for Hibs in the 2-0 win at Dundee United and it was his most impressive showing yet. His pace and trickery troubled United.

SECOND-HALF HORRORS HURT KILMARNOCK

COLLAPSES in the second half of games have been a recurring theme for Kilmarnock. On Saturday, Killie led 2-0 only to lose 3-2 to St Johnstone. Also, this month, the Ayrshire club lost 2-0 to both Livingston and Hibs where all goals were conceded in the second half — and Danny Rogers’ stoppage-time howler gifted St Mirren a point. Ultimately, these late lapses have cost Alex Dyer his job.

McALISTER MERITED A FONDER FAREWELL

EVERYONE has missed fans at grounds but when a club stalwart calls time on a long career it seems cruel that no one is there to give them the send-off they deserve. Jim McAlister started his career with Morton in December 2002. It ended with a 1-0 loss at Arbroath 18 years later. The 35-year-old midfielder had two spells at Cappielow.
