WHAT TO WEAR THIS WEEKEND
WIDE-LEG TROUSERS
COMFORT FIRST
For a skinny jean addict like me, I’ve approached this season’s wideleg trouser trend cautiously. A streamlined silhouette is always easier to achieve with a tighter fit but after the past few months of lockdown everything feels, well, a bit tighter. Plus we’ve spent so long in leisurewear that comfort is still a priority. A wide leg gives both a casual relaxed look, but, crucially, can be dressed up, too. Whether it’s elevating a jumper or testing a spring shirt as I am here, they’re a statement for your legs without actually having to get them out.
CATWALK INSPIRATION
DesIgners have embraced this trouser trend: Louis Vuitton made them extra baggy and louche, while Tom Ford’s black satin style is ripe for the return of the red carpet. Chloe’s pillar-box red version waves goodbye to winter — these crepe trousers I’m wearing from Boden are similarly cheerful, but easier on the wallet. They have a weighty feel which you should look for to ensure they hang properly.
IT’S A CINCH
A hIgh waist is crucial for elongating legs. I like styles that have a belt included to accentuate the waist, drawing the eye away from hips and thighs. You can always add your own belt. Choose a top you can tuck in without creating extra bulk. If the thought of a blouse alone makes you shiver, a longline cardigan goes well over the top.
TAKE YOUR PICK
BrIDgIng the gap from our muchloved joggers is John Lewis’s soft jersey palazzo style (below). or try a bright pop of colour with ghost’s bottle green pair with elegant dart detailing. Cropped versions (Jigsaw below) work well with a chunky ankle boot. or keep it long and make like Victoria Beckham who knows a peep of a heel underneath will create even more leg length.
