LIFE AND TIMES OF SCOTLAND’S

MOST CAPPED FOOTBALLER

-

AS Sir Kenny Dalglish celebrates his 70th birthday today, Sportsmail looks at a few of his memorable moments on the football field.

CELTIC DEBUT (1969)

His first-top team Celtic debut came in October 1969, in a league game against Raith Rovers. But it would be two more seasons before he became a regular. There was a sign of things to come when he hit six goals in a testimonial match.

SIGNS FOR LIVERPOOL (1977)

After making 320 appearances and scoring 167 goals for Celtic, Dalglish was signed by Liverpool manager Bob Paisley for a British transfer fee record of £440,000 as a replacement for crowd favourite Kevin Keegan. Dalglish made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut in the Charity Shield against Manchester United at Wembley.

WINS FIRST EUROPEAN CUP (1978)

Dalglish’s place in Liverpool’s history was cemented by the end of his first season, which finished with him making 62 appearances and scoring 31 goals. The most significant of those was the famous dink over goalkeeper Birger Jensen at Wembley as Liverpool won their first European Cup 1-0 against Club Brugge.

WINS LEAGUE AND CUP DOUBLE IN FIRST SEASON AS PLAYER-MANAGER (1986)

He guided Liverpool to their first league and cup Double as they pipped Everton to the Division One title by two points, with Dalglish himself scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford

Bridge on the final day of the season. The Reds went on to beat Everton in the FA Cup final a few days later.

WINS PREMIER LEAGUE AS BLACKBURN MANAGER (1995)

Rovers lost to Liverpool on the final day of the season but Dalglish was still able to celebrate a title win at Anfield as Manchester United could manage only a draw at West Ham. In doing so, Dalglish became only the fourth football manager in history to lead two different clubs to topflight league championships in England, after Tom Watson, Herbert Chapman and Brian Clough.

DARK BLUE LEGEND (1972-1984)

Dalglish represented Scotland at three World Cups in between 1974 and 1982 and gained an all-time record 102 caps. He scored 30 goals for Scotland and remains joint top scorer alongside Denis Law. One of his many highlights in a dark blue jersey was the winning goal against England at Hampden in 1976, when he famously nutmegged Ray Clemence (left) to help Scotland claim victory in the British Home Championship.
