CARDS FOR ‘GRANNY DIANA’

George, Charlotte and Louis write to her every year

- By Vanessa Allen

POIGNANT Mother’s Day cards drawn by Prince William’s three children for their ‘Granny Diana’ were revealed yesterday.

Princess Charlotte, five, wrote a touching message for Princess Diana, saying: ‘I am thinking of you on Mother’s Day. I love you very much. Papa is missing you.’

She decorated her card with a rainbowcoloured heart surrounded by flower and butterfly stickers and signed it with nine kisses. Kensington Palace said the children made cards in memory of Diana every year on Mother’s Day for William.

Prince George, seven, drew an image of the countryside on his card, with the message: ‘Dear Granny Diana, Happy Happy [sic] mothers day. I love you very much and think of you always, Sending lots of love from George xxxxx.’ Twoyear-old Prince Louis’s card was decorated with a multi-coloured heart and stickers of cartoon animals.

Pictures of the cards were posted on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Instagram page, where the couple were praised for keeping Diana’s memory alive for their children.

Diana died in 1997, but William has previously said that he talks to his children about their ‘Granny Diana’ at bedtime so her memory will be part of their childhood.

William, 38, was said to have been hurt recently by claims that his brother Harry, 36, had seized on their mother’s legacy, after he used a picture of himself with Diana to launch his new website with wife Meghan.

The brothers are due to be reunited at an unveiling of a memorial to their mother this summer, which is likely to be their first public meeting since Harry’s controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this month.

The statue of Diana was commissioned jointly by the princes and is due to be unveiled at Kensington Palace on July 1, which would have been her 60th birthday.

In a social media post, Kensington Palace said Mother’s Day could be ‘particularly challenging’

‘Papa is missing you’

for those who had suffered bereavement, as well as those who could not see their mothers because of pandemic restrictions.

The palace said: ‘This year Mother’s Day will be different once again. Many of us will be apart from our loved ones, but looking forward to a time in the not too distant future where we can give our mother a hug again.

‘But for those experiencing bereavement, today may be particularly challenging.

‘Each year on Mother’s Day, George, Charlotte and Louis make cards remembering their Granny, Diana, for William.

‘Whatever your circumstances, we are thinking of you this Mother’s Day.’

George, Charlotte and Louis also made a sponge cake for their mother Kate, and decorated it with chocolates, rainbowcoloured sprinkles and pipe cleaners twisted into the shape of hearts.

Kate, 39, also posted a picture of herself as a toddler, hand-inhand with her beaming mother Carole Middleton.

The Queen’s official account posted a black-and-white photograph of her with the Queen Mother, taken in Windsor on the eve of her 14th birthday.

The picture was shared with a message: ‘To all Mums everywhere, we wish you a very special Mother’s Day.’
