THIS first-ever episode sets out hotel owner Basil’s problem perfectly: he thinks he’s better than he is. Basil (John Cleese) listens to classical music, is desperate for a better class of guest, and claims to speak ‘classical’ Spanish, saying that this is why Manuel can’t understand him — but he’s also fundamentally incompetent.
