My money’s on the death of cash, so be card sharp

-

LIKe King Canute, none of us can turn back the tide. Cash is an anachronism that’s being replaced, at last, by technology.

It’s expensive to print, store, move and dispense, but easy to steal.

Most outlets allow customers to pay by cash, card or phone. Shops offer cashback for those who are less technically minded.

The problem is a paucity in budgeting skills, which should be taught in schools. Cash will be dead within 20 years. You can’t hold back the tide of progress.

SIMON SMITH, Margate, Kent.

LAST week, I queued at a manned checkout at Tesco only to be informed they would not accept cash. There is a move towards making cash only acceptable at self-service tills.

No doubt the supermarkets will claim cards are safer in these Covid times, but I see it as a cynical move towards automated shopping and reduced staffing.

The supermarkets have no idea what customer service means, but have a very clear view of their profits. I will be voting with my feet and giving my custom to independent shops.

SIMON PARSONS, Whitchurch, Shropshire.
