Gwynnie: It’s fine to watch pornography ...if it’s ‘ethical’

- By Dominique Hines

IT may not be an obvious stance for a leading light of the MeToo movement, but Gwyneth Paltrow has endorsed watching porn – so long as it is ‘ethical’.

The actress, 48, said X-rated films can be beneficial if they are made by women for women and even posted her approved list of adult websites.

But the mother of two has been criticised by experts who claim it is never possible to make truly ethical porn.

Miss Paltrow wrote on her lifestyle website Goop: ‘Of course, porn is not for everyone. For some, taking sex to an external world, on a screen, disconnects us from our own bodies. Others experience porn as a powerful exploration of sexuality.’

But Clare McGlynn, a law professor at Durham University,

‘Industry propaganda’

said: ‘In truth, the multi-billion pound porn industry is not going to be changed, or its impact diminished, by a few ethical porn companies.’

Research expert Dr Meagan Tyler has previously said: ‘The claims about ethical porn, at this point in time, are more industry propaganda than anything else.

‘It’s for a small segment of consumers who would like to think that their pornography consumption is unproblematic. In reality, it all feeds the same commercial sex industry.’

Recent statistics reveal that more than a third of 18 to 35year-old women watch porn at least once a week and the majority are interested in the ethics of the videos.

Miss Paltrow became an influential part of the MeToo movement, having spoken out against film producer Harvey Weinstein for his predatory harassment of several women in Hollywood, including her.
