Care worker fights to keep her job

- By Iona Young

A nurse is fighting to keep her job after putting a pensioner in a headlock and attacking a police officer while in the cells.

Carly Falconer battered her 75-year-old neighbour Anne Laing in the pensioner’s home in Carronshore, Falkirk, stirlingshire, in March last year and attacked an officer after being taken into custody.

The 31-year-old was found guilty of assault and police assault at Falkirk sheriff Court this month.

she now faces being struck off the nursing and Midwifery Council (nMC) register.

The nMC yesterday held the hearing relating to the court case in private. However, the nurse is also being investigated for charges including dishonesty and failing to give medication to 20 patients.

Included in 26 allegations made public was ‘on December 2, 2018, whilst employed by the Caledonian Court Care Home’ Falconer recorded she ‘had administered... medication... when you had not’.

Medication said to be missing included an antidepressant and opiate Tramadol. While employed by newcarron Court Care Home, there were also six charges of leaving mid-shift without permission.

At her trial earlier this month, the court was told that a drunk Falconer had gone to Mrs Laing’s home, pulled her hair and pulled her around, resulting in the OAP hitting her head on a stair post.

Falconer also put Mrs Laing in a headlock which caused her to hit her head again. The pensioner sustained swelling to her head, bruising to her arms and wrists and severe bruising to her thigh and knee.

At Falkirk police station, Falconer bit and kicked PC Courtney Craik, tampered with the cell camera and threw urinesoaked trousers at a witness.

Falconer told the court she was suffering from alcohol addiction and had experienced a ‘metamorphosis’ since the incident last year.

sheriff Derek Livingston put Falconer on a tag and gave her 80 hours’ community service.

The NMC hearing continues.
