It’s a much more dramatic season opener than usual, but hosted as ever by Padma Lakshmi (pictured with chef Tom Colicchio).

‘COUNTRY music is three chords and the truth,’ said songwriter Harlan Howard. This first of a repeat for Ken Burns’s masterly nine-part history of the genre digs well beyond that great statement, and is full of familiar faces, such as Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard.
TRAGIC EVENTS Collective: Unravelling A Scandal — Storyville, 9pm, BBC4
A REAL sense of loss powers this Oscar-nominated documentary, which moves with the energy of All The President’s Men. It starts with the aftermath of a nightclub fire that killed 37 in Bucharest, and follows Catalin Tolontan’s investigation into corruption in the Romanian healthcare system, and how that connected to further loss of life.
GILDED YOUTH Made In Chelsea, 9pm, E4
THE socialites are in the Cotswolds at the start of this new run of the reality soap, which is now on its 21st series — just think how much champagne they’ve drunk since episode one. Tonight, Ollie and Gareth have a big announcement, while there’s trouble for Maeva and James when Miles (pictured) swings back into the picture.
DETECTIVE WORK The Real Manhunter, 9pm, Sky Crime
EX-DCI Colin Sutton was the inspiration for the Martin Clunes drama Manhunt, and, in the first of this interesting new series, he revisits old cases. Tonight, Sutton recounts how he brought serial rapist Delroy Grant (‘The Night Stalker’) to justice. (Sky 121, Virgin 135)

THE gags have dated badly, but this comedy will still have a special place in the hearts of many. Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall and Bubba Smith are among the raggle-taggle band of hopeless cadets brought into the police training programme in a desperate bid to boost numbers.

DRAMA about a fictional doping scandal surrounding the Tour de France. Louis Talpe stars as the 38-year-old Belgian cyclist who, approaching retirement, is drawn to the pharmacy.
U.S. SITCOM Younger, 11pm, Comedy Central
SOME comedies make you think, but this U.S. show about a fortysomething posing as a twentysomething (Sutton Foster, pictured) is purely here to entertain. The new, sixth season begins with a plan to reveal Liza’s actual age to her colleagues in publishing, but events soon take a twist.
