Tavernier sets sights on more Rangers glory

- By BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

JAMES TAVERNIER last night predicted the Scottish Premiership title is only the start of a period of sustained silverware-winning success for Rangers. A pivotal figure as Rangers were crowned champions of Scotland for the first time in a decade, the Ibrox captain was speaking after pledging his future to the club until 2024. The 29-year-old’s contract had been due to expire at the end

of next season. But he was delighted to sign a two-year extension and believes a thrilling new era is dawning under Steven Gerrard. Tavernier said: ‘We’ve finally come to that 55th title and I believe that’s just the start of it. We have the full backing of the board and the supporters and this feels like the start of something special for the club. ‘As we celebrate our 150th anniversary, I am mindful that there is much more work to be done to ensure we uphold the values of Rangers. ‘I will continue to strive to be better as a player and captain and ensure we continue to set the standard higher than before, 55 wasn’t the end of the journey — it was only the beginning.’ Ibrox boss Gerrard believes tying down his skipper until 2024 reflects the club’s hunger to keep improving. ‘I am delighted to secure our captain on a new long-term deal,’ he told Rangers website. ‘This shows the ambition of both James and the club as we drive forward to fulfil our ambitions, domestically and in Europe. ‘His leadership is obvious on the field and the dressing room. He commands respect and leads with action and not words. James can continue to improve, as he is hungry to become a better version of himself on a daily basis.’
